Adam Alderman
Born 16th May 1983, with Achondroplasia, the most common form of disproportionate dwarfism.
Lives in Sible Hedingham, Essex
After leaving school and completing an NVQ in Business Studies with Braintree District Council, took a job as a Negotiator with a residential property letting agency. There was just too much desk work for him so he left and took a job as an orthotics technician, which is his current occupation. As he has had a laminoplasty and laminectomy operation on his lower spine, he has first-hand experience of wearing the same sort of back braces that he now makes.
Adam's main interests, apart from Powerlifting, are driving, he has a Ford KA; he enjoys clay pigeon shooting, he has his own Winchester 101 20 bore: and playing pool. Adam used to play in the local league but no longer has the time to commit to practise.
He began Powerlifting while competing in the Dwarf Athletic Association UK (DAAUK) annual games at the age of 13. It was just another sport to try his hand at amongst all the other sports and events that he was participating in. At the time he was quite good at discus and javelin, which included training with Fatima Whitbread, who is Patron of DAAUK. Over the next few years Adam took to powerlifting and the opportunity to train further came in the form of free access to his local gym. Over the next few years he managed to set new British and World Dwarf Powerlifting records in the 30kg, 40kg and 44kg classes.
Jason Irving persuaded Adam to enter for the British Disabled Men's Bench- press Championship in 2002 where he was successful, and from then onwards has trained under the guidance of Roy Garner as a member of the BALASA powerlifting squad.
Adam was invited to join the British Team for the French Open Bench-press Championship in January of this year where he was successful in winning the 48kg class. This was a great experience and he hopes to be able to build on that for more successes in the future. An opportunity to take part in the European Championships would be great but Adam's real goals are to compete at the Commonwealth Games and the Paralympics. |
