Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
National Framework – Disability Powerlifting

What is TASS?

The overall aim of the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is to help talented athletes who wish to progress with a formal academic programme but maintain an involvement in performance sport. Strategically, TASS will provide a coherent support system, driven through partnership working between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Further Education Colleges (FECs), National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB’s) and other sports organisations.
The scheme will operate around a national network in England of 9 regional consortia, based around a hub or core cluster of Higher Education Institutions working in close partnership with other interested institutions in the area.
The Government has pledged £3 million per year over a 2 year period (2004/5 – 2005/6). TASS will normally be offering scholarships of up to £3,000 to students aged 19 – 25, and bursaries of up to £1,000 for any talented young person aged 16 – 19 not in higher education.

The Aim for Disability Powerlifting

The aim for British Disability Powerlifting is to provide a transition for Powerlifter's who are still improving but who fall outside of the criteria for the World Class Performance Programme. This could be due to age or qualification criteria but are still seen to have potential to improve significantly over the next few years and to progress into the World Class Performance Programme. The secondary aim is to keep talented athletes, not on a World Class Performance Programme, in powerlifting by encouraging and supporting them to pursue both academic and sporting excellence. TASS will also provide the opportunity for athletes who are “newly identified” or have come into the sport late as a result of acquiring their impairment later in life or turn to Powerlifting as a means of continuing their performance. With the aim of supported Powerlifter’s to be meet the World Class Performance Programme criteria within 5 years. TASS will also be used to promote the development of female powerlifters.

TASS will offer:

Scholarships of up to £3,000 to students aged 18 – 35.

Bursaries of up to £1,000 for athletes aged 16–35 not in higher education.

Will I receive the money?

The TASS Bursary/Scholarship will be allocated on an individual basis via BWLA and the regional consortia.
